Summer 2023 Life Update

We are now halfway through 2023!

Net Worth: $726,146

Latest cool place we’ve been:

Belgium

Latest Labyrinth:

Amiens

That would be Ghent, Belgium, and the beautiful Amiens Cathedral labyrinth.

Despite taking a very expensive European vacation to England, France, and Belgium, our net worth grew nicely this quarter, increasing by $24,713 since April.

Our savings rate is currently sitting at 59% for the year, but is heavily skewed downwards right now as we’ve done all our overseas travel spending for this year already, but still have half a year left to “amortize” it over. We’ll likely do some trips within Canada in the second half of the year, but nothing like what we spent in Europe. Which was $7,220 for two weeks:

  • $2,663 – Flights
  • $1,035 – Accommodations (budget hotel in London, private apartments in France and Belgium)
  • $3,522 – Everything else (trains, restaurants, activities, etc)

For this year’s travel, we also did a February winter trip to the Okanagan to visit family:

Tubing

A trip to the Sunshine Coast:

And a camping trip in the Pemberton area:

Our year to date spending is $22,117, compared to $15,219 on this day in 2022. Again, it’s pretty skewed because last year we did our big trip in October and this year we did it in May, so it’s not a perfect comparison, but we expect things to loosely balance out by year-end.

If we retired today, our monthly income would be a respectable $2,420.

  1. Congratulations Steph and Cel, looks like you had a fantastic time. I keep on re-watchig your old video interviews, any plans to do more of these? An 2023 update on your life and what’s changed (and what’s remained the same) would be fantastic!

  2. Have you guys considered retiring abroad? I left and retired abroad on a portfolio of about $750k because my money goes so much further in middle income countries. Currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Housing, food, and transportation are about 1/3rd the price of Toronto.

  3. Would you be willing to share what hotel(s) you stayed at in London and France? We are planning a trip next year and I like to hear where people stay before I book “cost-effective” accommodations to a place I have never been.
